Cloud migration for small and mid-sized businesses in India: AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud
Key takeaways
  • All three major providers have data centres in India, which helps with data residency and speed.
  • Choose based on your existing software and skills, not on headline prices.
  • Migrate in waves – start with low-risk systems and keep a rollback plan.
  • Set budgets and alerts from day one; idle resources are the biggest source of waste.

Many Indian businesses still run accounting, ERP, file shares and websites on a server in the office. Power cuts, ageing hardware, ransomware and remote work are pushing them to the cloud. Done well, migration improves uptime and security and turns big hardware purchases into a predictable monthly cost.

The big three in India

ProviderIndian regionsStrong fit when…
Amazon Web Services (AWS)Mumbai, HyderabadYou want the widest range of services and a large talent pool.
Microsoft AzurePune, Chennai, MumbaiYou use Microsoft 365, Windows Server, SQL Server or Active Directory.
Google CloudMumbai, DelhiYou rely on data analytics, BigQuery, Kubernetes or Google Workspace.

All three are mature and secure. The best choice usually follows the software you already use and the skills of the team that will run it. Smaller workloads can also run well on simpler providers or managed hosting.

What to move, and how

ApproachMeaningGood for
Rehost (“lift and shift”)Move the server as it isQuick wins, legacy apps
ReplatformSmall changes, e.g. a managed databaseLess maintenance without a rewrite
RefactorRebuild parts to be cloud-nativeApps that must scale or change often
ReplaceSwitch to a SaaS productEmail, CRM, HR, accounting

A step-by-step migration plan

  1. Inventory: list servers, applications, data sizes, users and dependencies.
  2. Decide per system: rehost, replatform, refactor, replace or retire.
  3. Design the landing zone: accounts, network, backups, identity and security baseline.
  4. Pilot: move one low-risk system and test performance and backups.
  5. Migrate in waves with a tested rollback plan and a short freeze window.
  6. Optimise: right-size servers, schedule non-production shutdowns, use reserved pricing.
Turn on cost budgets and alerts before the first server goes live. Forgotten test servers and oversized machines are the most common reason cloud bills surprise people.

Security essentials in the cloud

  • Multi-factor authentication for every admin account
  • Least-privilege access and no shared logins
  • Automatic, tested backups in a separate account or region
  • Encryption at rest and in transit
  • Central logging – CERT-In expects logs to be kept for 180 days

Frequently asked questions

Is the cloud cheaper than our own server?

Often, once you count hardware replacement, power, backups, downtime and staff time. It is cheapest when resources are right-sized and switched off when not needed.

Can Tally or our ERP run in the cloud?

Yes. Desktop accounting and ERP software can run on cloud virtual machines or remote desktops, and many ERPs now offer cloud editions.

Will our data stay in India?

If you choose an Indian region, your data is stored in India. Check backup and disaster-recovery settings so copies also stay where you need them.
