Core Web Vitals explained: how to make your website fast for visitors and Google
Key takeaways
  • Good targets: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 ms and CLS under 0.1.
  • Images, fonts and third-party scripts cause most slow pages.
  • Measure with real-user data in Search Console, not just one lab test.
  • Speed is a feature: build it into design and development, then monitor it.

Most visitors leave a page that takes more than a few seconds to load, especially on mobile data. Google also uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, in its ranking systems. A fast site therefore helps both your customers and your search visibility.

The three Core Web Vitals

MetricWhat it measuresGoodPoor
LCP – Largest Contentful PaintHow quickly the main content (hero image or heading) appears≤ 2.5 s> 4 s
INP – Interaction to Next PaintHow quickly the page responds to taps and clicks≤ 200 ms> 500 ms
CLS – Cumulative Layout ShiftHow much the layout jumps while loading≤ 0.1> 0.25

How to measure

  • Google Search Console → Core Web Vitals: real-user data for your whole site
  • PageSpeed Insights: real-user and lab results for a single page, with suggestions
  • Chrome DevTools → Lighthouse and Performance: detailed diagnosis for developers
Test on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data – that is how many of your visitors in India experience your site.

Fixes that matter most

Faster LCP

  • Serve images in WebP or AVIF, sized for the screen, with responsive srcset
  • Don't lazy-load the main hero image; preload it instead
  • Use a CDN and good hosting; cache pages and static files
  • Load only the font weights you use and use font-display: swap

Better INP

  • Remove unused JavaScript and heavy page builders' extra scripts
  • Delay chat widgets, trackers and pop-ups until after the page loads
  • Break up long tasks so the page stays responsive

Lower CLS

  • Always set width and height on images, videos and embeds
  • Reserve space for banners and ads
  • Avoid inserting content above what the visitor is reading

Speed beyond the metrics

Clear navigation, readable text, accessible colour contrast and forms that work well on phones all improve how people experience your site – and how many of them become enquiries. Make performance part of the design brief, set a budget for page weight, and check it after every major change.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my PageSpeed scores different every time?

Lab tests vary with network and server conditions. Focus on the real-user (field) data and on trends rather than a single score.

Is a score of 100 necessary?

No. Aim for “good” Core Web Vitals for most real users. Beyond that, content quality and relevance matter far more for rankings.

Can WordPress sites be fast?

Yes – with a lightweight theme, few plugins, image optimisation, caching and good hosting.
