Local SEO for Kerala businesses: how to rank on Google Maps and “near me” searches
Key takeaways
  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence – you control two of the three.
  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile is the single most important step.
  • Steady, genuine reviews with replies build prominence and trust.
  • Location pages and consistent name, address and phone everywhere tie it all together.

For restaurants, clinics, shops, institutes, contractors and service companies, most new customers now start with a Google search such as “best dental clinic near me” or “AC service in Kakkanad”. The businesses shown in the map pack at the top get most of the calls. This guide shows how to earn that spot.

How Google ranks local results

FactorMeaningWhat you can do
RelevanceHow well your profile matches the searchRight categories, services, description and photos
DistanceHow far you are from the searcherAccurate address and service areas
ProminenceHow well known and trusted you areReviews, website quality, mentions and links

Step 1: perfect your Google Business Profile

  • Claim and verify the profile with the exact business name – no extra keywords
  • Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondary categories
  • Add services or products with descriptions and prices where possible
  • Set accurate hours, including holiday hours for Onam, Vishu, Eid and Christmas
  • Upload real photos of the premises, team and work every month
  • Post offers, events and updates regularly
  • Answer questions in the Q&A section

Step 2: earn and answer reviews

Ask every happy customer for a review – a QR code at the counter, a WhatsApp message after the visit, or a link on the invoice. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and within a couple of days. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them: it breaks Google's policies and can get reviews removed or the profile suspended.

Reviews that mention the service and location (“root canal treatment in Edappally”) help both customers and relevance – but let customers write in their own words.

Step 3: make your website local

  1. Show the same name, address and phone number (NAP) as your Google profile on every page footer.
  2. Create a page for each main service and each town or area you serve, with genuinely useful local content.
  3. Embed a map and add LocalBusiness structured data.
  4. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly – see our guide to Core Web Vitals.

Step 4: build local prominence

  • Consistent listings on Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and industry directories
  • Mentions in local news, associations and event sponsorships
  • Partnerships with nearby businesses that link to you

Frequently asked questions

Can I rank in a town where I have no office?

The map pack strongly favours businesses close to the searcher. For other towns, service-area settings, location pages and paid ads help, but you cannot use a fake address.

How many reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number. Aim for a steady flow of recent, genuine reviews and a higher count than your local competitors.

Should I put keywords in my business name?

No. Use your real business name. Adding keywords breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension.
